"Isn't it pretty?" Alverson said, "It's great that Chevy supported something as good as little league. I've got kids and grandkids that played in little league."
SAGINAW TWP. — Not many people win new cars. There are the Publisher’s Clearing House people, guests of Oprah and Duane Alverson.
The Saginaw Township man entered a sweepstakes sponsored by Chevrolet, giving away a new Equinox.
Participants were entered into the contest with a purchase of a $5 raffle ticket, which would benefit little league teams. The company gave away five cars nationwide.
When Alverson was told he was one of the five winners, he said he was in shock.
“You get a phone call that all of a sudden says you won, you wonder, is it legitimate, or somebody looking to make a sales pitch,” he said. “As it turns out, it was legit. We’re very, very lucky.”
Alverson purchased six tickets, but he says he did not expect to win.
“I appreciate somebody eventually has to win, but really, the credit goes to Chevrolet for giving a program that supports Little League,” he said. “I’m just one of the fortunate ones that happened to buy some tickets that happened to benefit the program. I was the lucky winner, and to that, I feel very fortunate.”
Alverson is a Saginaw Township resident and is president of Macdonald Broadcasting. His wife is Debbie Alverson.
He received his vehicle in a ceremony Thursday at Cook Chevrolet Buick in Vassar.
Steve Cook is the owner of the dealership. He said that Chevrolet has taken an interest in Little League because baseball is a sport “in the tradition of Chevrolet.”
“They’re trying to back with the ‘Chevy runs deep’ theme,” he said. “Trying to remind people of the country the traditions Chevy has had. So in the last year or two, we’ve endorsed baseball to remind the communities here in Michigan we’re proud to have Chevrolet here in Michigan.”
He says the company has worked to rebuild baseball diamonds for communities in need around the country and that his and other dealerships were encouraged to use some advertising revenue on behalf of Little League teams.
Cook said Alverson was the winner for the seven-state region, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois.
“It was kind of exciting to have that happen,” Cook said.
Alverson said he had not previously won contests.
“I just happen to be the lucky one this time around,” he said. “But the crux of the story, the real winner is Little League. Thanks to Chevrolet and Chevy dealers, that’s something they’ll continue.”
