SAN JOSE -- A $772 million contract to construct the BART extension to San Jose is about to be approved. The Board of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will be voting to award the contract to the joint venture of Skanska-Shimmick-Herzog when it meets on December 8th.

The VTA now needs to find out how much money the two-point-three billion dollar project will get from the Federal Transit Administration. The agency hopes to get $900 million in February. The FTA gave the proposed BART extension a recommended rating in 2010.

Construction of the 10-mile extension from Fremont could begin in 2012.
