'Trivial Pursuit Master Edition' Won't Make Its Cardboard Cousin Proud

For over 25 years, Trivial Pursuit has been a go-to parlor trick for know-it-alls as the ultimate test of trivia prowess. Today’s Pursuit players might be surprised to discover their favorite bar trivia cards are actually part of a board game, but the folks at EA haven’t. They’re responsible for Trivial Pursuit Master Edition, a full-blown board game app for the iPad.

With the mild success of other board games-turned-apps like Risk and Monopoly, and the mega-hit, Scrabble-copycat Words with Friends, Master Edition aims to bring a family game night favorite to the tech age. Several gameplay options allow players to choose from single or multiplayer, classic or pursuit, and varying levels of computerized-opponent strength.

In true Trivial Pursuit tradition, question categories range from academic math and science to obscure pop culture. Once a question is answered correctly, the player advances several spaces on the neon, lit-up game board. Answer enough questions correctly, and you’ll reach the end.

Unfortunately, this app needs a bit of tweaking before it can measure up to its cardboard predecessor. The graphics are basic and the question categories are a bit narrow. There are also several reported problems with crashing, especially on the first generation iPads. Long load times can also be quite tiresome for someone looking for a few quick trivia questions.

It might be a good idea to wait for a new release before purchasing Master Edition for your iPad. With the exception of Words with Friends, few apps have successfully transferred beloved board games to mobile apps without sacrificing content. Developers need to up their game if they want to make a dent in the board game industry. But who knows, they could be a few neon spaces away from victory.
