Jack's Cantina gutted by fire

City firefighters respond to early morning fire By Review Staff Updated 4 hours ago

Niagara Falls firefighters are on the scene of a fire that caused more than an estimated $500,000 damage at Jack's Cantina, a popular bar in the Clifton Hill area. They were called to the corner of Centre St. and Ellen Ave., shortly before 5 a.m., Tuesday morning.

"There was heavy smoke in the area and heavy smoke coming from the building," Fire prevention Capt. Ben Trendle said.

When firefighters arrived, they entered the building and tried to attack the blaze from inside.

But a partial collapse of the main floor forced them to leave the building and fight the fire from the outside, he said.

"It's a brick building, so the actual exterior held up pretty well," Trendle said. "In some areas, where the fire was, it was intense and basically destroyed it, and in some areas, damage was basically minimal."

From the outside, blown out windows and heavy damage to the roof was visible.

Trendle said an investigator from the Office of the Fire Marshal is expected to arrive later today to begin an investigation. When damage is over $500,000, local fire department's are required to call the provincial fire marshal.
