Hanging with Friends: App Takes Over Phones and High Schools

Every school year, various fads sweep their way across the Arrowhead campus as students become infatuated with the latest phenomenon. The current school-wide obsession isn’t a trendy new item of clothing or a popular movie, but a game known as Hanging with Friends.

“Hanging with Friends is a hot new sensation. I started playing when I got my new phone, and my whole tennis team was playing it so that’s how I knew about it,” said senior Ali Sievers.

So how does this “hot new sensation” work? It’s a modern spin on the classic game of hangman. One person creates a mystery word and sends it to a friend to solve via his or her Smartphone or iPod. Once your opponent solves, or fails to solve, the mystery word, they send a word back to the first player. This cycle continues until one person runs out of lives (there are five to begin with), and in turn loses the game.

“I’ve played with Ali Sievers twice and I beat her both times,” senior Anthony Hall said proudly. “But if you ask her, she’ll probably deny it.”

Hanging with Friends has become so popular that students can be found playing it during all hours of the school day. During senior study hall, lunch, and even the occasional math class, groups of students gather around the nearest iPhone to help their friends solve words and to create words that will hopefully stump their opponents.

Due to the whirlwind of excitement resulting from the new game, other kids have gotten curious about all the commotion and have joined in on the fun.

“I finally caved and got the game…now I’m completely obsessed,” senior Caitlyn Bralick said.

Bralick isn’t the only one who let curiosity get to her. Many students have admitted to downloading the app because their friends kept telling them to do so, or just because they’ve seen so many people playing it around school.

Senior Devin Conley even says she got an iPod just so she could play Hanging with Friends.

“The funny thing is, I’m not even kidding,” Conley said.

As with any school year, new trends are expected to emerge and students are expected to go crazy over the next best thing. Hanging with Friends is clearly the latest and greatest fad and at the rate it’s going, it will likely linger around Arrowhead for many months to come.
