By Ryan Nagelhout Niagara Gazette The Niagara Gazette Sat Nov 26, 2011, 11:37 PM EST

The Wolverines boys basketball team learned Saturday that the Primetime Shootout has been canceled by tournament organizers. 'Quiet superstar' Jeff Goldsmith named Gazette football player of the year

By Ryan Nagelhout Niagara Gazette The Niagara Gazette Sat Nov 26, 2011, 04:50 PM EST

Jeff Goldsmith doesn’t say much — on or off the field — but give him a bit of room to run and he can make the football crowd at Sal Maglie Stadium get loud in a hurry.

“I call him a quiet superstar,” Niagara Falls coach Don Bass said. “You see players that have some extraordinary talent and they let you know it, but Jeff, he just led by example.”

Ross MacManus - Telegraph

He did, however, pursue a kind of shadow career, recording cover versions of hit records under a variety of pseudonyms for budget-price labels, including a version of The Long And Winding Road in the name of “Day Costello” (Costello being his mother’s maiden name).

In 1973 he wrote and recorded the theme song of The Secret Lemonade Drinker, an award-winning series of television commercials for R White’s lemonade. His son, Declan, then a teenager, played drums and sang backing vocals on the recording. The series ran for a remarkable 10 years, with guest appearances by Frankie Howerd, Ronnie Corbett and others. MacManus also wrote and recorded songs for the soundtrack of the 1975 film Secrets of a Superstud.

Raul Malo's repertoire: Elvis, arias, country and more

Raul Malo is renowned for his voice and his versatility By Walter Tunis Contributing Music Writer

Sit yourself down at a Raul Malo concert and there is no telling where the singer — or the multi-stylistic, multi-cultural music that has so long distinguished his career — will take you.

The performance might employ the vast Nashville inspirations that played into the epic country music he created in the '80s and '90s with The Mavericks. From there, you might hear the joyous, brassy Cuban sounds that surrounded him in his youth. Or there might be a Roy Orbison-esque pop ballad that spotlights the range and emotive power of his singing.

Moving On: Spartans Crush Freedom High - Concord, CA Patch

The Star: The Spartans’ Austin Hooper caused Freedom High problems on both sides of the ball, hauling in a 14-yard touchdown pass and recording a pair of sacks. Senior quarterback Bart Houston accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) on 177 yards of total offense.

The Turning Point:  When the De La Salle grounds crew turned the lights on.  The home favorites seemed determined not to leave any doubt they were the superior program.

Jets QB Sanchez comes through in clutch

In the end, it wasn’t Rex Ryan taking a handful of first-team practice snaps away from Mark Sanchez that got the kid’s attention. And it wasn’t the boo-birds raining down from all over MetLife Stadium for too many bad decisions from the quarterback, and too many miscommunications with his receivers, and too many inaccurate throws, and one grievous interception.

'French Cancan': Broken Legs and Broken Hearts: Le Spectacle Avant Tout!

This is a gorgeous film. It’s gorgeous in its use of colour and the sumptuous costumes. In addition to these qualities that it shares with other Technicolor musicals of the Golden Age, such as Oklahoma or Carousel , being French it offers a slightly more hard-hitting dramatic prospect. Renoir, in his triumphant post-war return to French cinema, created this tribute – almost a love letter – to la belle époche Paris.

Henri Bendel Blows Into the Windy City

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Centennial stripe fold-over clutch ($175), Courtship hip bag ($328), and Debutante asymmetric croc clutch ($250), Henri Bendel

It’s a little known fact that Henri Bendel , the brainchild behind the famed eponymous department store, is the man responsible for introducing Coco Chanel’s designs to an America previously cut off from (and hungrily craving) French fashion. Because of his eye for luxury and impeccable overall taste, it’s no wonder the Henri Bendel name has carried a reputation for fashion greatness for more than 100 years. This month, the store will open its doors at Water Tower Place, finally gracing the Magnificent Mile with its gorgeously edited collection of beauty products and accessories. No longer required to make the trip to the flagship Fifth Avenue townhouse in New York, shoppers can focus on more important things—like surrounding themselves with the iconic Bendel brown and white stripes adorning the Chicago store. Bills will turn to Spiller with Jackson out for season

After steeling themselves for Fred Jackson’s power, the Jets now have to worry about C.J. Spiller’s speed instead.

NEW YORK — Eight days after a sensational performance against the New York Jets, Denver linebacker Von Miller was fined Von Miller $25,000 for roughing the passer in that game.

Slave of technology, the clock is ticking

By Amishi Bajaj Contributing columnist November 25, 2011 6:08PM

In a lifestyle as fast-paced as ours, time is quite the commodity. We are always on the move: running, leaping, flying to achieve the American Dream. I have personally wondered how much I can truly achieve in a day. Is it plausible to plan to work out at the gym, write a midterm paper, start shopping for the holiday season and do laundry all in one day? What if I wanted to add to the list — read a Jodi Picoult novel and play the piano? Sometimes the answer would be yes, and other times, I’d find myself less successful. Marie Curie discovered radium, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton helped lead the temperance movement. And I couldn’t finish laundry? What was I busy with instead? Where all of my time went, I wasn’t really too sure.
