Hang Out with Audubon and Elvis at Museum Nights

On Thursday, October 20, the Mobile Museum of Art is hosting a free nighttime event in celebration of three current exhibitions.

Since museum hours do not typically include evenings, Museum Nights provides an after-hours experience where guests can enjoy a glass of wine while live music fills the Grand Lakefront Lobby. Museum Nights begins at 5:30 p.m. inside the museum and includes live music by Terri McAlpine, light hors d'oeuvres, exhibition inspired programming and access to the museum gift shop and galleries. Admission is free and visitors will receive one complimentary drink ticket. The event ends at 8 p.m.

On display is Audubon’s life and development as an artist; chronicled in the exhibition "John James Audubon: American Artist and Naturalist" which features hand-colored engravings from his masterwork "The Birds of America". Inspired by the exhibit, Audubon-esque wildlife will be on display in the museum’s Grand Lakefront Lobby courtesy of Five Rivers and the Environmental Studies Center. Like Audubon once did, visitors can try their hand at sketching the animals at one of the drawing easels. Mobile Museum of Art Curator of Exhibits Donan Klooz will also lead a gallery discussion about the exhibit.

"Elvis at 21" features 56 images of the future king on the brink of stardom. Taken by photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer who decided to "tag along" with Elvis for the assignment, the photographs document a time when he recorded the hits "Don’t Be Cruel" and "Hound Dog" but could still sit alone at a drugstore lunch counter. Along with the accompanying catalog "Elvis 1956", Collage, the museum store has a section of Elvis themed merchandise available.

"Projections and Reflections: A Collaboration of Music and Visual Art" is a multi-media installation by visual artist Sally Wood Johnson and composer Dorothy Hindman. As conceived by Johnson and Hindman, lines of the score for cello, French horn, timpani and guitar emerge randomly through nine separate speakers to accompany projections of Johnson’s recent photography and earlier computer generated forms.

The Mobile Museum of Art hosts special exhibitions from world-famous museums and collectors throughout the year. Open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Museum operations are made possible, in part, by funding from the City of Mobile, Mobile County, the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
