ESMA begins physical inspection of used cars in Abu Dhabi in coordination with ADNOC

Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) will begin physical inspection of cars in the emirate of Abu Dhabi starting 10 October 2011 in coordination with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to make sure that used cars that need to be registered in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi adopt all the standards required by ESMA and the Gulf Standards Organization (GSO).

All used cars that are traded in the emirate of Abu Dhabi are mandated to get the conformity certificates, which are issued by ESMA to certify that the used car either imported or locally traded - complies with the UAE requirements.

Failure to obtain the conformity certificates means the used car will not be registered.

The inspection is in line with ESMA's mandate to protect consumers' health, life and safety. It aims to ensure that vehicles and tires follow ESMA's technical regulations and are in not in any way posing danger to the consumers' health and are also not polluting the environment.

Eng Mohammad Saleh Badri, ESMA's Acting Director General, said, "This physical inspection aims to establish confidence in ESMA's technical inspection services and safety licensing departments, and applies the latest Gulf and international requirements."

ADNOC joins a list of centers where the inspection and issuance of the conformity certificates can be carried out. To date, centers, which issue conformity certificates, are Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC/EPPCO), Fujairah Traffic Police, Tamam Company, Emirates Oil Company "Shamil" center for Vehicle Testing services, and ESMA offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Fees can be paid through the e-Dirham billing machine and direct payment method when the e-certificate is issued.
