Rotary Club of Lake Conroe gala features “Elvis Meets the Beatles” theme - Your Houston News: News

Rockabilly and pompadours take on moptops and the British Invasion when the Rotary Club of Lake Conroe hosts its annual fundraising gala.

“Elvis Meets the Beatles” is the theme of primary fundraiser held each year by RCLC set for Nov. 12 at La Torretta Lake Resort. Tribute artist Vince King performs as the king of rock and roll, Elvis Prestley, and Houston’s Fab 5 take the stage as the Lads from Liverpool, the Beatles.

“This is going to be a spectacularly entertaining evening,” said Kris McBride. “We’re expecting many attendees to dress in their best 60s outfits – and considering the guest list, that should be an interesting sight to see.”

That’s because the RCLC annual gala attracts a wide range of Montgomery County dignitaries, civic leaders, elected officials and socialites. The Elvis-Beatles theme adds a new level of fun and nostalgia to the event which has relocated to La Torretta Lake Resort to accommodate the higher turnout expected because of the unique theme.

“There are a lot of charitable fundraising events held in Montgomery County,” said McBride, “so it’s important we do something to set ourselves apart. We’ve done it with this one.”

The theme of the gala is based on an actual meeting and subsequent jam session that took place between the pop icons in Los Angeles in 1965. While no film or recording was made documenting that event, local actors and filmmakers have created a video that speculates how such a meeting of musical titans might have occurred.

“Gary Parker and Craig Jones got together with several local actors to portray Elvis and the Beatles,” said McBride. “It’s a fun and interesting short film that we’ll show during the event.”

Music for “Elvis Meets the Beatles” will be a night of pleasant memories, said McBride. King is a highly regarded performer and Houston’s top professional Elvis tribute artist who performs regularly in Las Vegas as well as throughout the country.

The Fab 5 is a popular Houston-area tribute band that features the look and sound of the Beatles played on the same instruments used by Lads from Liverpool. They incorporate the black suits of the early-Beatles era as well as the Sgt. Pepper apparel of the psychedelic period.

“Beyond the fun and entertainment, the gala helps us to support area charities,” noted McBride. “A total of 98 percent of our net fundraising effort goes for scholarships for Montgomery and Willis High School students and to support charitable effort like Memory Park, the YMCA, Montgomery County Food Bank and other worthy causes.”

Also on the agenda is a tribute to the Gullo family, which McBride said has done so much to support worthy causes throughout Montgomery County and beyond.

Tickets to “Elvis Meets the Beatles” are $100, inclusive of dinner and entertainment. For tickets and information, call 936-522-8673.

“A lot of us remember the days of bell bottoms and flower power,” said McBride. “It should be a very interesting evening – and it’s all for a very good cause.”
