Woman rescued at falls remains in hospital

A 19-year-old woman rescued from the Niagara River near the brink of the Falls Wednesday remains in hospital.

Niagara Parks Police say a woman was spotted in the water near the Canadian Niagara Power building around 4:30 p.m.

The woman, a resident of Scarborough, was sitting in the water next to the stone retaining wall after falling about five metres in to the river.

Firefighters rescued the woman and she was taken to hospital by ambulance.

She was treated for back injuries and remains in hospital under the Mental Health Act.

Police say an investigation indicates the woman deliberately went in to the river.

The woman's name is not being released.

Last month, a 19-year-old Japanese student living in Toronto died when she fell into the water from a spot not far from Wednesday's rescue.
