Listen Up: “Sparkling Day” By Elvis Costello

Pretend I’m Bill Maher for a second. New Rule: every stale, stuffy English romantic comedy should feature a new Elvis Costello song. (It worked for Notting Hill , I actually sat through that one.) Rock n' roll's favorite angry not-so-young man has penned a brand new song called “Sparkling Day” for a new yawner called One Day starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess.

Album Review: ‘National Ransom’ By Elvis Costello

Record Rewind: 'Imperial Bedroom' by Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Watch This: Elvis Costello Joins The Strokes @ Madison Square Garden

The film’s plot sounds like a cheap retread of Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and Before Sunset —couple meets on one magical day, promises to reunite on that day a year later, blah blah blah, eventually fall in love, blah blah blah, cue the sweeping, romantic Elvis Costello tune!

And so I shall (via Stereogum ):

While the movie sounds like a bore, the new track sounds like a welcome return to the baroque pop approach of Imperial Bedroom and the Burt Bacharach co-written Painted From Memory . I agree with Scott over at Stereogum— Elvis has mined himself pretty deep in country/folk territory, so it’s nice to hear some of the old insatiable genre hopping again.

One Day is in selected theaters now, but as your trusted counsel, I advise you go grab a copy of the soundtrack instead. It features some fun ‘80s and ‘90s favorites from the likes of Primal Scream, Fatboy Slim, James, Tears For Fears, and one of my favorite Elvis cuts, “Tear Off Your Own Head (It’s A Doll Revolution)”.

What do you think of the new Elvis Costello track? How about Anne Hathaway’s attempt at a British accent? Talk back! Hit up the comments section below.
