Elvis, Buddy to return for ASF Valentine’s concert

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Hearts will flutter and hips will shake when Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly return to Alabama Shakespeare Festival Feb. 14, 2012 for a Valentine’s Day concert featuring the love songs of two rock ¤’n’ roll giants.
Scot Bruce will return to ASF as Elvis and John Mueller will perform as Buddy in the concert that begins at 7:30 p.m. Both performers are the only tribute artists officially endorsed by the Presley and Holly families.

The Valentine’s Day concert will feature sets of famous love songs by Elvis and Buddy including “Love Me Tender” to “Suspicious Minds,” from “Oh, Boy” to “That’ll be the Day.”
Bruce and Mueller performed together at ASF two seasons ago to a sold-out house. CNN raved that Bruce is “the closest they can get to Elvis in the flesh.”
The Hollywood-based Bruce has entertained audiences worldwide including Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Europe and South America. His summer concerts at ASF over the past five years have played to sold-out houses.
Mueller won a New York Drama Desk Award for his portrayal of Buddy Holly in “The Buddy Holly Story.” Mueller also performed as Holly in the national tour of the celebrated musical. The Chicago Tribune reported that Mueller “is living proof of Buddy Holly’s legacy.”

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — “Cotton Patch Gospel,” a full-length musical based on the retelling of the life of Jesus set in modern-day rural Georgia, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Bama Theatre ( www.bamatheatre.org ), 600 Greensboro Ave. in Tuscaloosa.
The popular show, written and originally performed by former University of Alabama student Tom Key, with music and lyrics by Harry Chapin, is a retelling of the gospels of Matthew and John in a lively bluegrass setting. The Rev. David Meginniss will be narrator with Andy Meginniss on banjo, Jeannie Randall on bass and Randolph Horn on mandolin.
All proceeds from the performance will benefit the Alabama Choir School, founded in 1985 by Karen Nicolosi. The choir school is a community organization for boys and girls from first grade through high school with a curriculum that includes performance, travel, music theory, vocal technique and music history.
Tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for seniors and $5 for students and are available at the Alabama Choir School, Christ Episcopal Church, at 6th Street and Lurleen Wallace Boulevard North behind the Bama Theatre; or at the box office one hour before the performance.
PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Saenger Theatre’s Broadway in Pensacola series begins with the return of film and theater veteran Hal Holbrook in his Tony Award-winning one-man show, “Mark Twain Tonight!” at 8 p.m. Oct. 15.
Tickets for the reserved-seating event are $58 and $48 plus applicable service charges. PENSACOLA, Fla. — Artel’s popular “Art á la Carte” luncheon returns Sept. 26 to the gallery’s beautiful new location, the Old Escambia County Courthouse, 223 Palafox Place in downtown Pensacola. Doors open at 10 a.m. for the popular and successful wearable art fashion show and luncheon.

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — “Thacker Mountain Radio,” the Oxford-based music and literature radio program heard weekly on Mississippi Public Broadcasting, will bring its hour-long live broadcast to Ocean Springs at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 to the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center of Arts & Education, 1600 Government St.
Reserved-seat tickets are $12. Guests will include author Keith Spera (Groove Interrupted), North Mississippi native Jimbo Mathus, and the classic New Orleans party band the Creole String Beans.
“Thacker Mountain Radio” is a live, unrehearsed broadcast that features author readings and an array of musical performances, usually on the Square in downtown Oxford, Miss. The Aug. 27 broadcast will emanate from the Trent Lott Theater at the Mary C. The show will be taped and rebroadcast on Mississippi Public Broadcasting, which airs the show statewide Saturday nights after Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.“
Previous guests on “TMR” include authors Rick Bragg, Larry Brown and Roy Blount Jr., and musical guests Marty Stuart, Elvis Costello and the Avett Brothers.
