Giants' Ahmad Bradshaw nursing sore back, concerns coach Tom Coughlin, could sit against Jets
New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw is unsure he will play Monday against the Jets.
The injury-plagued Giants have yet another banged-up key player to worry about.
Top tailback Ahmad Bradshaw , who sat out practice on Thursday with a sore back, is still not fully healthy, Tom Coughlin said Friday. And that has the coach worried.
"He's doing all right," Coughlin said at a fan festival celebrating the newly renamed MetLife Stadium . "I'm a little bit concerned about this 'lingering' business. But it's not anything that I'm told is a real issue."
Bradshaw, who could miss Monday night's game against the Jets , suffered the injury in Monday night's win over the Bears when he took a knee to the back, Coughlin said. He practiced on Wednesday, but spent Thursday watching from the sidelines.
The 5-9, 198-pound Bradshaw has been followed by durability questions. He fought through foot and ankle injuries in 2009, and had minor ankle surgery done this offseason.
Coughlin compared Bradshaw's current injury to a "hip pointer" in his back, and said he expects the tailback will "recover well.
"Whether he plays (Monday)," Coughlin said, "I don't know."
Safety Antrel Rolle won't be a full-time cornerback this season. But he will be a part-time one.
Since losing Terrell Thomas to a season-ending ACL injury on Monday, the Giants have practiced twice, and Rolle, a former corner in Arizona , has lined up as the slot cornerback in nickel packages in both sessions. Friday, he confirmed that coaches have asked him to slide to the position in the nickel.
"That's something they've asked me to do," he said. "That's something I've done pretty much my entire career. It's just a real minor adjustment. That's all."
Thomas had been covering the slot in nickel packages early in camp, but when he went down, the Giants were left with few options, partly because Aaron Ross , who will replace Thomas as a starting corner, dislikes covering slot receivers.
Rolle doesn't mind.
"I played the nickel back position often (in Arizona)," he said. "It's pretty much in my comfort zone."
Add Amani Toomer to the list of people who believe Aaron Ross will have a bounce-back 2011. The former Giants receiver thinks the team's secondary will thrive despite its recent rash of injuries, and Ross will be the key reason why.
"I think he's going to show that he can play," Toomer told the Daily News. "I think that he's a good corner. Very competitive guy."
Toomer played with Ross from 2007-08, and remembers the young corner making six interceptions during those two seasons. Those skills are still there, Toomer said.
"He'll be fine," Toomer said. "He has all the ability, all the intangibles that you look for in a corner. He got hurt and lost the starting job, but now he has the opportunity to take it back."
