Upon news that the long-running “Kate Plus 8″ has been cancelled by The Learning Channel, Kate’s ex-husband and father of her children Jon Gosselin fired what could be a thinly veiled salvo against his ex-wife.

“I think everything had run its course and it was time to come to an end anyways,” Jon Gosselin told Radar Online Tuesday. “I hope they (children) can have more private family moments. I hope that this will bring more privacy to my children and that they can get the proper attention they need for any personal issues they may have in the future.”

TLC announced Monday it would not renew “Kate Plus 8″, contradicting an interview last week with Headline News in which Kate Gosselin spoke of a future for the show. The network said the show would end after it hit 150 episodes, but that TLC would “check in with Kate and the family periodically with specials in the future.”

“Jon and Kate Plus 8″ premiered on The Learning Channel in 2007, following on the heels of the couple’s appearances on previous shows that highlighted Kate’s pregnancy with sextuplets. For a cable reality show, “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ was a hit. Viewers tuned in to see the difficulties of the couple’s lives, and the resultant bickering. Allegiances formed toward one or the other spouse, depending on if viewers subscribed to the viewpoint of Kate as a henpecking taskmaster or Jon as not mature or disciplined enough for the responsibilities of fatherhood.

Nonetheless, Jon and Kate represented a new generation of reality-television stars, and news of their breakup had tabloids picking over the minutiae for several months. To what extent the massive coverage represented authentic public interest vs. manufactured sensationalism is open to interpretation.

Since their separation, tabloid and entertainment journalists have covered any visible animus between the parents.
