New Falls clinic to be led by nurse practitioner

A new primary health-care delivery model in which nurse practitioners are the lead providers will be opened in Niagara Falls.

On Wednesday, Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor announced the province will support the opening of a nurse practitioner clinic on Drummond Road. The clinic will be operated by Sam Ibraham and Craitor said he feels it will assist with the wait times at Greater Niagara General hospital in Niagara Falls. “Nurse practitioners have the skills and the ability to diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications and order appropriate diagnostic testing. In short they can make sure you get the timely access to the health care you need.”

Average family spending $319 on school supplies: Study

The Canadian economy is getting a boost from an unexpected source.

The average family plans to spend $319 on their back-to-school budget, according to a recent study from the Bank of Montreal.

Leger Marketing polled more than 1,500 adults and found the bulk of pre-Labour Day spending will go towards clothing and shoes -- between $210 and $260 -- while another $25 to $40 will pay for classroom supplies such as pens and binders.

Restitution shortfall sends Falls woman to prison

LOCKPORT—A woman who failed to pay full restitution in a forgery case was sentenced to 1 1/3 to four years in prison Wednesday by Niagara County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III.

Angie M. Casal, 31, of North Avenue, Niagara Falls, had admitted to her second probation violation.

Last October, Murphy sentenced her to six months in the County Jail for not completing her assignment to the county work program. Casal also fell behind on repaying $7,800 she stole by forging checks taken from the homes of two patients whom she served as a home care aide in 2008.
